Prayer Profile:

Albania is a small, mountainous nation in the Balkan Peninsula and home to four million people. There are an additional three million Albanians living outside the country in neighboring lands. Since the fall of communism and the end of state-declared atheism in 1991 political instability and ethnic tensions have been issues in the country. The country is still considered to be ethnically Muslim as Islam is the predominant religion: Muslim 70%, Albanian Orthodox 20%, and Roman Catholic 10%.

In 1997, during the Albanian anarchy, and also in 1999 during the Kosovo war, people became much more desperate and therefore willing to open their hearts to God. Although Albania’s economy continues to grow, the country is still one of the poorest in Europe, hampered by an inadequate energy and transportation infrastructure.

Redemptive Purpose: During the years of communism in Albania, one person shines bright as being a redemptive figure: Mother Teresa. For over 45 years this Albanian woman ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying in India, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity’s expansion, first throughout India and then to 123 countries.

Key Scripture to Pray: "I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me." - Acts 26:18

Going Before the Father:

• Pray that the eyes of Albanians will be opened and that they will move from darkness to light.
• Pray for unity of Christians within the church and between churches.
• Pray that Albanian Christians will have a desire to know God better and to share the Truth with others.
