Prayer Profile:
The lands that today comprise Croatia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the close of World War I. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia.
Following World War II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent Communist state under the strong hand of Marshal Tito. Although Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it took four years of sporadic, but often bitter, fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands.
The main southern border is with Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Croatia you find the majority of the population to be Roman Catholic, where just to the south the majority religion is Islam.
Redemptive Thought: "In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost, I, abbot Drzhiha, wrote this concerning the land which Zvonimir, the Croatian king, gave in his days to St. Lucia." These words are the beginning of the Baška tablet, (from 1100). The tablet is considered to be the birth certificate of the Croats. May the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost be strong in Croatia.
Key Scripture to Pray: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” - Matthew 28:18-20
Going Before the Father: Many Croatians would say they are Christians, but they have no idea what it really means. Pray that God will open their hearts to a personal relationship with Christ. Pray also that each person will take time to read the Bible and search for the truth and knowledge of their need for salvation.
Religion and ethnicity are very closely linked for Orthodox Serbs, Muslim Bosnians and Catholic Croats. Pray for spiritual breakthrough, so that peoples’ religions would not be barriers to their seeking Jesus.
Evangelical Christians have stood out as being some of the only people who have cared for and ministered to all of the ethnic communities during war. Pray that this testimony of love and compassion will have a lasting impact for Croatia.
