Prayer Profile:

Greece was the first European country to be evangelized. Paul journeyed to cities like Philippi, Thessaloniki, Athens and Corinth.
The Orthodox Church kept the Hellenic (Greek) culture and language alive throughout the 400 years of the Ottoman rule. Greece is one of the first nations in the world to be officially Christian, by constitution, defining the Greece state as Christian Orthodox.
Today, modern Greek society enjoys increasing prosperity with membership in the European Union and a younger generation that is more open to new ideas, both good and bad.
In the book of Daniel, chapter 8, Greece is one of the places mentioned as part of end-times events.
Redemptive Purpose: Paul, in the book of Romans, identifies two main groups: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” Even though the lands were controlled by the Romans, it was Greek philosophy and culture that was the main influence. The New Testament was written in Greek. The Greeks were/are the people of intelligence and wisdom who built the foundation of the modern Western civilisation.
Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom. - 1 Corinthians 1:23
Going Before the Father: Much of Western thought (wisdom) stems from Greek philosophers such as Plato and Socrates. The Romans also took over the Hellenic gods, merely changing their names but maintaining all the attributes and the worship. Pray that the power of the cross of Jesus will become wisdom for the people of Greece.
Pray for revival in Greece through discovering the Gospel in the patristic writings and the Bible. May Jesus be the center of their hopes and desires.
Twenty centuries after Paul visited cities in Greece for the first time, Greece today has become an increasingly multi-culturally changing community that needs the Gospel as much as ever before. Pray for God’s purposes to be fulfilled in all He has for Greece.
