Slovenia Prayer Profile:

In the 16th century, the Protestant Reformation spread throughout the Slovene lands. During this period, the first books in the Slovene language were written by the Protestant preacher Primoz Trubar, establishing the development of the Slovene language. However, almost all Protestants were expelled from the Slovene lands by the 17th century.

Despite its small size, Slovenia controls some of Europe’s major transit routes. Because of this, through the years it has been controlled by many different powers. For example, after World War II, Slovenia became a republic of the renewed Yugoslavia, which though Communist, distanced itself from Moscow’s rule. Dissatisfied with the exercise of power by the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991 after a short 10-day war. Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy have assisted in Slovenia’s transformation to a modern state.

Redemptive Purpose: Primoz Trubar’s legacy among Slovenes cannot be overstated. Many say Slovenia would not exist as a nation were it not for Trubar’s love for his people and their language. His legacy can be seen on the Slovene 1 euro coin; in English is says, “Stand and Withstand.” In context his quote is: “With such faith a Christian can stand and withstand in troubles and temptations and resist the unbelief that is in our flesh.”

Key Scriptures to Pray: Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground… - Ephesians 6:13

O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you. - 2 Chronicles 20:6

Going Before the Father: The majority of the people of Slovenia are Catholic (60%). May we continue to pray in the spirit of Primoz Trubar that the Slovenes would be people who would be strong followers of Jesus and would stand and withstand anything that would separate them from the Lord Jesus.

There are 47 known evangelical churches with an estimated 1,100 born again Christians. There is a Catholic church in most cities, but they are mainly there for cultural and social reasons. Pray for the evangelical churches to get a vision to reach out within their communities and country.

As a major transit route, Slovenia can be used for good. Cocaine and heroin travel through this area. Pray against the drug trade and that His Kingdom would come.
