Prayer Profile:

Located at the crossroads of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, Europe and Africa, Spain’s history and culture are made up of a rich mix of diverse elements.

Roman Catholicism has long been the main religion of Spain, though it no longer has official status. About 76% of Spaniards identify themselves as Catholics. A study conducted in October 2006 by the Spanish Centre of Sociological Investigations shows that of the Spaniards who identify themselves as Catholics or members of other faiths only 19% attend church every Sunday. Though Spanish society has become considerably more secular in recent decades, the influx of Latin American immigrants, who tend to be strong Catholic practitioners, has helped the Catholic Church to recover.

The recent waves of immigration have also led to an increasing number of Muslims, who number about 1 million. Presently, Islam is the second-largest religion in Spain–about 2.3% of the population.

Redemptive Purpose: Islam was dominant in southern Spain starting in 711 under the rule of the Arabs and Moors. Islamic control of Spain was gradually eroded by the Spanish Reconquest, which was the process by which the Catholic kingdoms of northern Spain eventually managed to succeed in defeating and conquering the southern Muslim states of the Iberian Peninsula in 1492. Muslims have expressed a desire to have Spain back as an Islamic territory.

Key Scripture to Pray: The LORD has vindicated us; come, let us tell in Zion what the LORD our God has done. - Jeremiah 51:10

Going Before the Father: 300,000 people are addicted to heroin and cocaine, a major factor in Spain’s AIDS epidemic. There are now more people living with AIDS in Spain than anywhere else in Europe. Pray for the different organisations and Christian ministries that are caring for and rehabilitating drug addicts.

There are over 1 million students in Spain, most of whom have never really heard the Gospel. There are many university towns with no outreach to the young people living there. Reaching this generation is absolutely critical. Pray!

Pray for spiritual growth in the personal lives, families and ministries of church leaders, and that churches will be planted in the 90% of all towns and villages where there are still no evangelical churches.
